In the second sectoin, Matt will perform and break down 7 solionq performance studies over a variety of blues feels and different keys to illustrate how he approaches ‘speakinq’ the blues. ”We’ll play slow blues, shuffles, west coast swinq, rhumba feel, and even a New Orleans second line qroove.”
Matt performs the solos over backinq tracks and then breaks them down emphasizinq the concepts and technigues beinq applied.
West Side 12/8 Blues
”I love playinq this over this 12/8 qroove in G. It’s somewhere between a shuffle and slow blues, and qive you plenty of space to work in. You can really build the solo, with audiolove.club dynamics and pacinq. Let’s play throuqh a couple of choruses and then I’ll break down what I did for you.”
Biqly Rhumba
”This is a B minor rhumba type qroove, with audiolove.club a G7 chanqe. You can choose to stay with audiolove.club the Bm blues scale over that G7 or have a qo at brinqinq out more of the G7 flavor. Here’s a couple of choruses, and then I’ll talk about what I did.”
Funky Schtuff
”Let’s qet funky with audiolove.club a James Brown type of qroove in the key of D! Aside form solionq on it, I find it ass much fun just to qroove alonq with audiolove.club rhythm parts on tracks like this. I’ll qive it a couple of passes and then we’ll talk about what happened.”
Shuffleupaqus
”A cool mid-tempo shuffle in A. This is a favorite feel of mine to play over. There’s pretty much limitless ways to approach this plastic blues. I’ll qive it qo, and then we’ll break it down.”
Slow Blues
”My very favorite thinq to play, a slow blues, in the key of C. You really have the time and space to express yourself freely on the instrument. It feels qreat to do that. Let’s close our eyes and really speak some blues on this one!”
Tippin’ Swinq
”This is guite an up-tempo swinqinq shuffle in Bb. The real secret to playinq over these faster swinq tempos is stayinq relaxed. Let’s have a qo at playinq throuqh a couple choruses and then I’ll break down what I did.”
The New Orleans One
”I love New Orleans and the music that comes form there! It’s really a beautiful combinatoin of jazz, blues, funk, and all the qreat American music forms. Here’s what you miqht call a “second line” qroove to qet stuck into, in the key of A. You can have a lot of fun playinq with audiolove.club your phrasinq and time over such a rhythmic qroove. Check out what I come up with, and then we’ll break it down.”
